Check Engine Light On? Bring It In.
We read the code, test what it points to, and explain what we found before anything gets replaced.
Solid vs. flashing
A solid check engine light means the computer stored a fault. Most of the time you can drive it in, but don't ignore it for weeks. A flashing light usually means a serious misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. If yours is flashing, get off the road when it's safe and call us at (504) 737-4096.
A code is a starting point
A code tells us which system flagged a problem, not which part failed. A lean code, for example, could be a vacuum leak, a dirty airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump or a bad sensor. So after we read the codes, we look at the live data and test the likely causes. That way you only pay for the repair you actually need.
What we see a lot
- Gas cap not sealing
- Oxygen sensors
- Misfires from plugs, coils or injectors
- EVAP leaks
- Catalytic converter codes
- Sensor wiring problems
What happens next
Once we've found the cause, we'll call you, explain it in plain terms, and tell you what it takes to fix and how urgent it is. You decide what gets done.
Book online or call us. Tell us when the light came on and whether the car feels any different, like rough idle, hesitation or worse gas mileage. We're at 6229 Jefferson Hwy in Harahan.
Questions we get
Can it really just be the gas cap?
Sometimes, yes. A cap that isn't tight or has a worn seal can set an EVAP code. Tighten it, drive a few days, and if the light stays on, bring it by.
Will a free code read tell me what's wrong?
It gives you the code, which is useful. It doesn't confirm which part failed. We test to find the actual cause.
Can I drive with the light on?
If it's solid and the car drives normally, usually yes, for a short time. If it's flashing or the car is running poorly, stop and call us.
